CHAPTER TEN

Asher fought with himself on what to do. He needed the wolves to stay with the pack and all on their territory. It was a long hike on two feet, but the only way to find the cameras was to go as himself.

“How do you feel about going for a hike?” Asher parked the truck and turned to Gwen.

“Are you going to take them down?”

“I can’t. I just need to let it ride out, but I need Kai and all other wolves to stay on their territory, or at least not travel in this direction.” Asher hated this. His connection with Kai kept him grounded. Being forced to keep his distance and to force Kai to do the same hurt. It was a physical pain in his chest. He didn’t want to find out what would happen if they grew apart or lost each other.

“How far away are they?” Gwen looked to the woods.

“Too far on two feet. But we only need to find the cameras and the direction they’re pointing. I need to figure out their blind spots.”

“Let’s do it.” She gave a firm nod and determination lit up in her eyes.

After going inside to change clothes, they entered the woods hand in hand.

“Was I out of line to suggest veterinary assistant as a career choice for you?” When Asher mentioned it the other night on the couch, he wasn’t guarding his thoughts or words. It worried him to bring it up now. But despite that, he liked the idea of her working beside him.

“Why do you think that was out of line?” He could hear mirth in her voice.

“I don’t want to be intrusive or make it seem like I’m trying to steer you in a specific direction.”

“Then why did you ask?” Gwen’s voice turned soft. He felt her eyes on him, so he turned his eyes on her. The brown in hers softened and her freckles seemed to dance around them.

“You handled it so well.”

“But that was only twice and in strange circumstances.”

“Not strange. And sometimes that’s all it takes. Besides,” he paused and bent to place a quick kiss on her lips, “I like the idea of keeping you next to me.”

“I thought you weren’t trying to steer me?”

“I’m not. But it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like it.”

“And who says if I did do that, I’d work for you?”

Asher raised his brow, attempting an intimidating stance, and tried to come up with a comeback to the teasing he heard in her voice, could sense in her body’s reaction, and feel through their bond. His jaw worked up and down for a moment until he broke and laughed. “I got nothing.”

She leaned closer to him while they walked. After walking in silence for a while, Asher realized Gwen effectively evaded him.

“You never answered my question.”

“You weren’t out of line. You gave me something to think about. I’ve had such a hard time finding a career path for myself. I’ve been unsure of who I am and what I want to spend the rest of my life doing.
